WELCOME
This digital archive is dedicated to inner Sydney’s rich and expansive graffiti writing and urban art subculture. It is part of a larger research project which seeks to map, frame, decipher and archive the tensions and conversations embedded in this everyday cultural assemblage to reveal how graffiti shapes and transforms place. The photography is also an endeavour to collect fragments, to construct images of how these practices and traces are situated in response to an increasingly commodified, monitored and sanitised built environment. I believe that graffiti's transgression is a critical constituent of Sydney’s everyday cultural heritage that cannot simply be written off because it fails to satisfy a normative communicative agenda. Raising awareness of the documentation of traces and places like this is incredibly important because it reminds us that although the graffiti will fade, the people and the stories behind them will not.
